Horse Therapy in Yakima
In the wholesome children’s movie Grand Champion
there’s a quote I’ve always loved. Try as I may, I can’t find the exact wording, but it goes something like this; “There are places in a child’s heart that only horses can reach.”
Anyone who’s ever loved a horse as a child can understand what that means. For many children, horse therapy can be a lifesaver. It’s being used to help break down communication barriers for children with autism and to help children deal with post traumatic stress syndrome.
Yakima residents who are looking for horse therapy centers are in luck. We actually have two horse ranches where families can go to work with counselors and horses together.
The Pegasus Project in Yakima
“Pegasus Project is a North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) Premier Accredited Center, providing therapeutic riding and equine-assisted activities to those with special needs and disabilities. Founded in 2003, Pegasus Project began at Snow Mountain Ranch in Cowiche, WA as a pilot project with seven riders with special needs and one instructor. Due to the remarkable benefits observed and the tremendous response from the riders and their families, Pegasus Project continued to expand its therapeutic riding services and now serves an average of forty riders every week.”

Spirit of Hope Equine Center for Life & Learning
“Working with large and powerful animals helps participants overcome fear. Accomplishing tasks involving horses, in spite of this fear, creates confidence and helps the participants deal with other intimidating situations in life.
Like humans, horses have distinct personalities. They provide opportunities for metaphorical learning. Using metaphors is an effective technique when working with even the most challenging individuals or groups.”

As a side note, I was on the set during the production of this film, I think it was Emma Roberts’ second movie. It’s an excellent family film that can be enjoyed by all ages.
